Patient of the Month-Mary Alice

Congratulations to our current patient of the month---Mary Alice! This sweet lady was born in Oklahoma and raised in Texas. She has been a Utah resident for over 15 years and she loves it! Mary Alice has taught in a variety of disciplines including health and physical education, gymnastics, swimming, dancing, and English. She also coached high school tennis, volleyball and baseball. She married and had four children, two boys and two girls. Mary Alice keeps busy with genealogy, traveling (she’s visited every continent except for Africa!) and presiding over different organizations. An interesting fact about Mary Alice is that she travels to Washington D.C. every year with her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mary Alice is such a sweetheart and we love visiting with her every time she comes in!

Skating Party Report

In June Total Care Dental held a 50’s themed family roller skating party for patients and friends. The party was a lot of fun—with poodle skirts, cupcakes, skating games, and even a special appearance by Elvis! We would like to thank all who attended and made it such an enjoyable event.

Fruit Basket Winner

Congratulations to Chelsea who won our festive fruit basket from our Hawaiian week at the office.

Good-bye to Betsy

Total Care Dental would like to wish a warm goodbye to Betsy, one of Dr. Jorgensen’s assistants, who will be moving with her two adorable boys to Colorado this month. We have loved working with Betsy; she has been a wonderful asset to our practice and we wish her the best in all she does.

A Note from the Hygienist---Why do I Need a Cleaning Twice a Year?

As your dental healthcare providers we strive to help you keep your mouth healthy. We recommend that you come in for regular cleanings at least every six months. This allows us to remove tartar (calculus) and plaque that you cannot see or remove yourself. If tartar or plaque is allowed to build-up, the bacteria inside it could cause a gum infection called Periodontal Disease. Periodontal Disease can be serious. It affects the bone underneath your gum tissue, which could lead to the loss of teeth. Periodontal Disease has also been linked to systemic illnesses like heart disease and diabetes.
To help motivate our patients to stick to a recommended hygiene schedule we offer a warranty on our restorative work. As long as our patients come in at their recommended recall appointments we gladly guarantee our work for up to five years.
We appreciate our patient’s trust and continued patronage. The most important part of our job is keeping our patients healthy. Help us help you by continuing to stick to the schedule your hygienist has recommended for you.

Dentistry With a Heart

Dentistry with a Heart - February 18, 2005
American Fork dentists Dr. Michelle Jorgensen and Dr. Dan Coles decided it was time to use their heart, and give back to the community that has given so much to them. The result was their first Dentistry with A Heart Day.

“We have had amazing success during the four years Total Care Dental has been open,” says Dr. Jorgensen, “and we owe this success to our wonderful patients, friends, team and the local community.” They wanted to find a way to say thank you, and a day of donated dental work during the Valentine season seemed like the perfect answer.

The doctors knew that there were families in their area that can not afford dental care. The entire team at Total Care Dental pledged to provide a day of charity dental work to help serve some of this need. “There are no Medicare or Medicaid dental benefits for adults in our state, and very limited benefits for children,” says Dr. Coles. “There is a great need for cleanings, fillings and other basic dental care, which is what we provided.”

Dentistry with a Heart at Total Care Dental was held on Friday, February 18th. The doctors and team were able to help 32 patients, providing a total of $12,426 of dentistry to those in need. They shared heartaches, stories, and even a few tears with their patients. Dr. Jorgensen explains that, "This was a great sucess for all of us. Patients received dental care they desperately needed, and we felt great giving. This dental care will improve dental health, self esteem, and overall health and wellness. What better gift could we give?”

Dentistry with a Heart - February 11, 2005

On February 11, 2005, Total Care Dental will be sponsoring their first annual “Dentistry with a Heart” Day. Because this is a wonderful community that has helped Total Care Dental grow, Dr. Dan Coles and Dr. Michelle Jorgensen would like to give something back.

The entire day will be devoted to charity dentistry. We will be contacting shelters, ecclesiastical leaders, and others that know the needs of members of our community, and will provide dentistry at no charge for those who truly need it. The incredible Total Care Dental team will be joining them on this incredible day. If you would like to nominate someone to receive dental care, you may contact us at 801-756-3737. We are also accepting donations that may be given along with the dental care.

Thank you for helping Total Care Dental become what it is today.

Did you know?

According to a study by the Gallop Organization and Consumer Reports, dentists are among the top five most trusted professionals.

What do powdered fruit, talc, honey, dried flowers, mice and lizard livers have in common? They have all been ingredients in ancient toothpaste and powder. Yum.

Attention Chocolate Lovers…Many dentists agree raisins can cause more tooth decay than chocolate. Sticky foods such as raisins and dried fruits can stay on the teeth longer and develop more decay.

According to a study at the University of Connecticut, too much toothpaste early in life is responsible for more than 70% of fluorosis cases (staining or mottling of tooth enamel that develops when children swallow fluoridated toothpaste). Although this problem is only cosmetic, it is recommended children under six only use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste and be reminded to spit it out after brushing.

Dental Implants
Say goodbye to loose dentures

Do you struggle to eat the foods you like, worry about smiling and get embarrassed talking to friends because of a loose, floppy denture? If so, dental implants may be the answer you have been looking for.

Dr. Coles and Dr. Jorgensen recently attended a two day course about implant supported dentures, taught by a world-renowned expert in the field. This procedure is a breakthrough for people who are missing teeth – even if the teeth have been gone for a long time. Dental implants can permanently replace one or more missing teeth, anchor dentures or even eliminate your dentures entirely. The course helped both doctors realize how important dental implants are for those who may have no hope of having teeth again.

Recently, Dr. Coles and Dr. Jorgensen worked together to help a patient regain her smile! At her final appointment, she told us how thrilled she was with her teeth. She said she would do it all over again – without a second thought. She mentioned that she had minimal discomfort, and that is was truly a miracle to have teeth again.

This patient had been without eight of her teeth for over 20 years, and thought there was nothing she could do about it. She refused to have pictures taken, and hated to smile even though she is a very happy, friendly person. Her life has changed through dental implants.

Restore your confidence and improve your life – ask about what dental implants can do for you.

Makeovers Don’t have to be Extreme

It’s no secret that our smiles have a huge effect on how others see us, and how we feel about ourselves. Few things are more uncomfortable than watching a person self-consciously conceal a smile behind his or her hand. Many patients tell us that they would love to fix their smile, but they assume it will take something extreme – like they see on TV – to make it possible. These patients are thrilled to find out there are many options to improve their smiles.

Dental bonding is a procedure that has been around for many years, but has greatly improved in recent years. In bonding, a thin layer of white filling material is placed on the surface of the teeth. This can change the shape, size, even color of the teeth. Patients tell us that the best thing about bonding is that it is very conservative. We call it an “additive” procedure, because little or no tooth structure is removed – the material is simply added to improve the appearance. It is reversible – if you were ever to want it removed, your tooth is intact underneath. Patients also like that it is a one-visit procedure, often without even being numb. You can leave with an instant new smile that very day.

Patients frequently ask us about the cost of this procedure. Bonding is ½ to 2/3 the cost of traditional porcelain veneers. You can have a Hollywood smile without the Hollywood price tag!

For more information about conservative, yet effective cosmetic procedures, call us at 801-756-3737.
